Learn How to Create a Cartoon Bird in zBrush
This course is for anyone who wants to learn a great
workflow for creating high quality 3D cartoon characters in zBrush. We
will cover all the basics and show you how you can take any drawing and turn it into a
clean high end 3D model.
We will cover important
sculpting techniques and I will show you how to properly paint your
model inside zBrush. We will also take a look at some of the more
popular brushes and alphas which you can use to add fantastic skin
detail and paint any design you want on your own character.
will end the course by bringing our final model into Keyshot via the new zBrush to Keyshot Bridge plugin.
Welcome to the course!
Meet Alan, Your instructor.
What will you learn and what are the final objectives?
We begin by setting up our reference image using spotlight and creating the initial body mesh from dynamesh.
Using the insert sphere brush we create the top and bottom shapes for our beak. At this point we need to make sure it is still low resolution so we have an easy time shaping our mesh.
Next, we create two simple eyes and eyebrows. We use our insert sphere brush as well as draw our eyebrows using tubes.
We will take advantage of the very powerful tube brush and draw our wings from the side. Then we will make them wider while the symmetry setting is on so we can work on both wings at the same time.
Using zSpheres we will build our leg and then mirror it to the other side.
In this lesson we will create the feather for our character. We will learn how to use polypainting and the importance of adding more resolution to achieve higher quality during painting.
We quickly duplicated our original feather mesh and rotated each clone. It is very important to use shift during our model rotation in order to achieve perfect alignment.
Lets add a little detail by painting highlights on top of our model. Adding extra painting detail can make a huge difference during our final render.
Lets take a look at rendering our character in Keyshot! We will use the new zBrush to Keyshot bridge plugin to bypasss setting up uvs, all of our polypainting detail will simply show up in Keyshot without any extra work.

Lets create a beautiful eyeball by projecting a texture onto dynamesh sphere and adjust the resolution to hold our rich image.
Cool trick to split your shapes into multiple pieces and only paint one section at a time.
Using the panel loops will allow you to create super clean and polished forms, perfect for robots or anything that requires clean shapes.
Use shadow box to quickly create geometry from your masks or import PSD files from photoshop and use them to extrude clean 3d dynamesh shapes!
