Please feel free to download this Maya Project Files.

2
Prepare the profile images in photoshop

What is this lesson about?
This lesson covers the image editing in Adobe Photoshop. It is mainly the creation of the alpha channel for a 24-bit color depth image.

Why creating a 32-bit color depth image?
With a 32-bit image importing into Autodesk Maya, the "unwanted" portion will be transparent hence less "obstructive" during the modeling process.

What is an alpha channel?
Alpha channel is a 8-bit color depth image normally consisting of the gray scale. Within the scale, 100% white means opaque, 100% black means transparent. Between white and black is translucent.

What is a 24-bit color depth image?
A 24-bit color depth image has 8-bit Red, 8-bit Green and 8-bit Blue.That makes a 24-bit color depth image.

What is a 32-bit color depth image?
By adding another 8-bit into the existing 24-bit makes a 32-bit color depth image. In another words, the 24-bit image has a 8-bit alpha channel.

What are the common 32-bit image formats?
Targa(.tga), Portable Network Graphics(.png), Tagged Image File Format 32(.tif)

What image viewer did I use to view 32-bit image?
One of the world most popular image viewer software called IrfanView. You can download from http://www.irfanview.com/

Setting the image plane in Autodesk Maya
What is this lesson about?
This lesson covers the setting up of the profile images created from the previous lesson.

What is the procedure of setting up the profile images in Autodesk Maya?
01) Import the front profile image into the front view to create front image plane
02) Import the side profile image into the side view to create the side image plane
03) Adjust the scale of both images to fit
04) Check to ensure the features (e.g. mouth, eyes, nose etc) are matched in both images
